  • Grand Army Of The Republic Parade Down Washington St. 1904

    The Grand Army of the Republic parade marched down Washington Street in Boston on Aug. 16, 1904. Over one million people saw 25,600 veterans of the American Civil War march through the city lead by General John C. Black. Every street that intersected the parade route was blocked by throngs of people, and balconies and windows were jammed with folks trying to get a glimpse of the parade. The founding principles of the GAR, "Fraternity, Charity and Loyalty," are shown in the banner on the building to the left.
